OREANDA-NEWS. On August 18, a Russian major general was killed in Syria. This was reported by the Defense Ministry of the Russian Federation.

The officer died when an improvised explosive device was detonated next to a convoy of Russian military personnel near the city of Deir ez-Zor. The bomb went off on the side of the road when a convoy was returning from a humanitarian action. “During the evacuation and the provision of medical assistance, a Russian senior military adviser with the rank of major general died from the received severe wounds,” the statement says. Two servicemen were injured.

The Investigative Committee of Russia opened a criminal case. “Investigators of the Investigative Committee, who are now serving in Syria, will establish all the details,” the message of the agency reads. Head of the Committee Alexander Bastrykin noted that, according to the agreements concluded earlier, Russian investigators, with the assistance of the authorities of Syria, deal with every crime committed against Russian military on the territory of this country.
