OREANDA-NEWS By the end of 2023, the total volume of Russian gas supplies to Greece increased more than fourfold compared to 2022. Dmitry Birichevsky, head of the Department of Economic Cooperation of the Russian Foreign Ministry, announced a sharp increase in exports of this type of fuel from Russia to the NATO country. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.

Despite a significant increase in gas exports, the indicator continues to remain significantly below the levels recorded before 2022, the analyst complained. However, taking into account the strategy of the European Union (EU) authorities to sharply reduce dependence on imports of Russian energy resources, the dynamics of supplies to Greece in 2023 can be considered positive, he explained. "The facts, as they say, are obvious," concluded Birichevsky.

Earlier, he reported a noticeable increase in Russian gas supplies to Europe. Thus, according to the results of the first half of 2024, the export of this fuel from the Russian Federation to the EU exceeded the figure for the same period in 2023. Against this background, the expert noted, the share of Russian gas in the structure of European imports currently reaches 15 percent.

During this period of time, Birichevsky added, France turned out to be one of the leaders in terms of the growth rate of purchases of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia. The European country has increased imports of this type of fuel from the Russian Federation by more than two times. In the first six months of 2024, the total volume of supplies in this direction increased from 2 to 4.4 billion cubic meters, most of which went to re-export, the analyst concluded.
