OREANDA-NEWS. Russian ex-policeman Mikhail Popkov, better known as the «Angarsk maniac», was serving a sentence in a penal colony for dozens of murders committed by him, when he confessed to committing two more crimes. The court added a new term to his two life sentences.

The Angarsk City Court sentenced Mikhail Popkov to nine years and eight months in a penal colony, the IC for the Irkutsk Region said in a statement. This sentence was imposed for two murders committed by Popkov in 1995. Popkov himself reported these crimes to the investigation while serving a sentence in a special-regime penal colony for previously committed crimes.

«Taking into account the previous sentences, Popkov was given a final sentence in the form of life imprisonment with serving in a special regime colony», the IC said in a statement.

Popkov committed crimes on the territory of the Irkutsk region in the period from 1992 to 2010, attacked women of various social status aged from 16 to 40 years, the IC previously reported. Later, fragments of their bodies were found in woodlands and at the roadsides on the territory of the Angarsk, Usolsky and Irkutsk districts of the region.

After examinations conducted, including test by the State Scientific Center for Social and Forensic Psychiatry named after V. P. Serbsky, the investigation concluded that Popkov did not suffer from dementia or any mental illnesses. At the time of the crimes, he was sane.

In January 2015, the Irkutsk Regional Court found Popkov guilty of the murder of 22 women and one attempted murder. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in a special regime colony.
