OREANDA-NEWS Alexey Chepa, First Deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, criticized Canada's refusal to extradite Yaroslav Hunka (Gunko), a former soldier of the SS Galicia division, to Russia on charges of genocide during the Great Patriotic War. The deputy shared his opinion in an interview with Lenta.ru".
"This is an unprecedented phenomenon. It's a shame for these countries. This should say a lot and explain why we are talking about the need to denazify Ukraine," Chepa reacted to Ottawa's decision.
Earlier, Canada refused to extradite Yaroslav Hunka (Gunko), a former soldier of the SS Galicia division, to Russia on charges of genocide during the Great Patriotic War, citing the absence of an extradition treaty between the countries.
On September 22, 2023, at a meeting of the Parliament of Canada in honor of the visit of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, 98-year-old Hunka was among the guests, whom Speaker of the House of Commons Anthony Rota, to the applause of the audience, introduced as "a fighter for Ukrainian independence against Russians during World War II."
Later, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau apologized for honoring the veteran of the SS division. In an address to Parliament, he called the presence of this man a terrible mistake. The politician also noted that those invited to the meeting did not have enough information when they greeted Hunka with ovations.
The Russian Interior Ministry has put an SS veteran on the wanted list, accusing him in absentia of genocide of civilians on the territory of the Ukrainian SSR during the Great Patriotic War.
