OREANDA-NEWS Limited volumes of seeds from abroad may soon begin to be imported to Russia. The government is working on this issue and will announce the decision in the near future, Deputy Prime Minister Victoria Abramchenko said in a conversation with RIA Novosti.

"As for quotas for the import of foreign seeds, this idea is being worked out, we will most likely see such decisions soon at the government site," she said about the plans of the authorities.

According to her, the Russian authorities met with the Association of European Businesses to discuss this plan. Abramchenko added that foreigners did not refuse to work in the country.

Currently, such crops as potatoes, sugar beet, corn and sunflower depend most on imports. According to them, the level of self-sufficiency of 75 percent should be reached by 2030, the Deputy Prime Minister noted.

The Ministry of Agriculture came up with the idea to introduce restrictions on the import of seeds in February. At the same time, back in August last year, Russian agro—industrialists were warned about the need to prepare for a possible ban on the import of seeds from "unfriendly" countries and increase purchases of domestic planting material - the measure was supposed to become part of counter-sanctions against the West.
