OREANDA-NEWS  New approaches to collecting biometric data from foreigners arriving in Russia will be tested in a number of Russian regions. This was stated by Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev during a meeting on state migration policy, RIA Novosti reports.

In particular, the experiment will be conducted at the Moscow transport hub, at one of the checkpoints in the Orenburg region, and in some other places. In the future, the experience gained can be extended to other regions.

Earlier, Medvedev stated that Russia's migration policy should meet the interests of the country's citizens, not foreign countries. He also stressed that migrants with low qualifications should come to Russia only for the period of their work.

The day before, Russian Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev announced that the number of illegal migrants in the country has increased by 40 percent since the beginning of 2024. According to him, 740 thousand people are in the country without legal grounds. Illegal immigrants come to Russia on a tourist visa, but remain in the country after its expiration date. In total, as of October 1, more than 6.5 million foreign citizens arrived in Russia.
