OREANDA-NEWS. Russia and Syria agreed to transfer additional territory and water area for the expansion of the territory of  the air base Khmeimim located in the governorate of Latakia.

The protocol to the agreement on the deployment of the Russian military was published on the official portal of legal information. Damascus signed it on July 21, Moscow s on July 30. The parties agreed to deploy a medical and rehabilitation center for the Russian aviation group at a plot of 8 hectares in Latakia.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed to hold talks with Syria on expanding the territories of military bases in the territory of the country.

The aviation group of the Russian Aerospace Forces has been based at the Khmeimim base since 2015, when the Russian military began to take part in hostilities against terrorist groups in Syria.
