Roskomnadzor Asked for the Right to Punish Foreign Media
OREANDA-NEWS The British media control service fined a major Russian publication for not respecting the principles of impartiality. In Roskomnadzor suggested using retaliatory measures.
The press service of Roskomnadzor reported that the supervisory authority is preparing amendments to Russian legislation that will allow sanctions to be applied to foreign media operating in the territory of the Russian Federation.
“The purpose of the amendments is to bring the standards applicable to foreign media that work in Russia in accordance with British standards,” the regulator said.
We will clarify that earlier the Ofcom media regulator, operating in the United Kingdom, wrote a fine of 200 thousand pounds (over 15.5 million rubles) to the Russian television channel RT. He found that from March 17 to April 26, 2018, several news programs were broadcast in Britain, in which events were biased.
Margarita Simonyan, editor-in-chief of the publication, did not agree with Britain’s position and stated that the channel would appeal the decision. The Russian Foreign Ministry supported the Russian publication, calling the incident an act of censorship.
