According to the headquarters, the Delta strain remains the dominant strain of coronavirus in the Russian Federation. In the structure of new cases of COVID-19 identified, the Delta variant is 56.2%, the Omicron variant and other non-dominant strains are 43.8%.
In total, 38,850 cases of COVID-19 were registered over the past day. The largest number of cases was detected in Moscow (11,557), St. Petersburg (4,753) and the Moscow Region (2,795).
A day earlier, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said that due to the spread of the Omicron strain, the load on all parts of the medical system is growing. He explained that in the ambulance the workload has increased by about 30%.
On January 18, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin noted that Omicron is rapidly spreading around the world. He said that the government will allocate an additional 15 billion rubles for the purchase of medicines for COVID-19.
On the same day, a virologist at the Gamaleya Center, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Anatoly Altshtein, said that the Omicron coronavirus strain could not be considered less dangerous, since its reduced lethality was offset by increased contagiousness.
