Vilnius Intends to Require Subsidies from the EU Due to the Migration of Lithuanian Citizens
OREANDA-NEWS. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda said that the country’s authorities intend to demand at an extraordinary summit of the European Union that it continues to subsidize Lithuanian economy, due to the fact that 10 % of citizens have left for Western Europe since the country joined the EU in 2004.
“I intend to get substantial funding for my country, in particular through the European Development Fund and direct subsidies to our farmers… Lithuania is… a donor to the EU budget, but we give Europe not money, but labour power. In recent years, Lithuania has lost 10 % of its workforce, people who moved to Great Britain, Germany and contributed to economic growth in these countries,” Nauseda said. The politician emphasized that the farmers of the Baltic states “receive the least subsidies within the framework of the EU Common Agricultural Policy”.
