Ukrainian Politician Predicted Transfer of Part of the Country’s Territory to Russia
OREANDA-NEWS. Former Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Pavlo Klimkin, stated that part of the country’s territories can pass to Russia if Kiev makes “broad compromises” in resolving the conflict in the Donbass. He wrote about this in an article for the periodical Yevropoiskaya Pravda.
The politician noted that, probably, some representatives of the Ukrainian authorities do not exclude such compromises, but he considers such a scenario to be “extremely dangerous”. “This path, if it would be chosen, will end with the collapse of the country and the fall of a significant part of our territory into vassal dependence on Russia,” Klimkin wrote.
According to the ex-minister, another way can be “freezing the conflict” which means maintaining the status quo subject to a ceasefire in the Donbass. In his opinion, this status can block Ukraine’s future membership in NATO and delay the return of territories to the country for an indefinite term.
Klimkin also mentioned the third variant: “fight to the victory.” However, he considers that its main drawback is that it will unlikely be supported by society.
In general, the politician concluded that Ukraine has no optimal solution of this problem.
On December 9, the “Normandy Four” summit was held in Paris. The leaders of Russia, Ukraine, France and Germany took part in the meeting. They agreed that by the end of the year it is necessary to achieve a complete ceasefire in the Donbass, the separation of forces in three new points by the end of March 2020, to exchange detained persons according to the “all for all” formula and to integrate the “Steinmeier formula” into the legislation of Ukraine, which determines the mechanism for introducing the special status of the Donbass.
