Ukraine Plans to Allow Second Citizenship
OREANDA-NEWS. Ukraine plans to allow second citizenship, including with EU countries, but not the Russian Federation. This was stated by the head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Dmitry Kuleba.
Dmitry Kuleba explained the provision on dual citizenship at a briefing on March 5. He indicated that he is a consistent supporter of this idea, and said that the Ukrainian authorities are working with the deputies on the appropriate legislative changes. He also noted: "There is one exception - this is an aggressor country, we cannot talk about any dual citizenship with it ... We plan to allow dual citizenship with EU countries, countries, as you said, five eyes, six arms, four legs, then there are countries of the world that are friendly to us, that do not pose any threat to us. "
According to the constitution of Ukraine, the country has a single citizenship.
Earlier, the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) of Ukraine instructed the Cabinet of Ministers to develop a bill within two months, which would spell out the issue of dual citizenship. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy put the NSDC decision into effect.
Relations between Moscow and Kiev have deteriorated against the background of the situation in Donbass. The Ukrainian authorities have previously repeatedly accused Russia of interfering in the country's internal affairs. In January 2015, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a statement in which the Russian Federation is called the "aggressor country". Russia denies the accusations of the Ukrainian side and calls them unacceptable. Moscow has repeatedly stated that it is not a party to the internal Ukrainian conflict and is interested in Kiev overcoming the political and economic crisis.
