Trump Threatened to Block US Defense Budget because of the Clauses on Social Networks
OREANDA-NEWS. US President Donald Trump promised to veto the defense budget for the financial year of 2021 if it includes a section exempting Internet companies from responsibility for moderating user-generated content. The head of state reported this on his Twitter page.
In his post, the politician wrote that the section is a gift of avoiding responsibility for technology companies, emphasizing that only in the United States enterprises have such an opportunity. According to the head of the White House, this is a serious threat to national security and the integrity of the election. “Our Country can never be safe & secure if we allow to stand,” Trump explained. He threatened to “unequivocally veto” the draft defense budget unless this “very dangerous & unfair” section is removed from it.
The mentioned Section 230 provides broad protection for the companies that moderate their platforms. According to its clauses, an online computer service provider is not considered a publisher, as well as independent source of information.
