Trump Called Talks on Nuclear Disarmament with Russia a “Biggest Problem”
OREANDA-NEWS. US President Donald Trump said in an interview with radio host Hugh Hewitt that the United States is working with Russia on a nuclear disarmament deal.
The Russian authorities “want to do it badly”, Trump stated, meaning reaching an agreement with Washington. “I don’t think they’ll wait. I think they want to do it. And it’s a great thing. This is the biggest problem in the world today,” the American leader explained.
In early August, Trump spoke by telephone with Russian President Vladimir Putin on arms control, including the situation with the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START III). It provides for a reduction in the number of deployed warheads, intercontinental ballistic missiles and missiles carried by submarines and heavy bombers. The agreement, signed by Moscow and Washington in 2010, expires in February 2021. The parties have not yet agreed on the extension of the treaty.
