The Wall Street Journal Reports of Possible Reduction in US’ Military Assistance to Iraq
OREANDA-NEWS. The United States is preparing a possible reduction in military assistance to Iraq in the amount of 250 million dollars, already approved by Congress and paid to the republic annually since 2017, if Baghdad demands to withdraw American troops from the territory of the country. This was reported by The Wall Street Journal citing the electronic correspondence of the State Department and the Pentagon.
In addition, the State Department’s Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs plans to request the White House to cancel 100 million dollars of military assistance to Iraq in 2021. However, a final decision has not yet been made.
Earlier, the State Department threatened to impose sanctions against Iraq if it purchases S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems from Russia.
