OREANDA-NEWS. The talks between the presidents of Russia and the United States, Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden, which took place the day before, is one of the stages of bilateral relations. This opinion was expressed to RIA Novosti by the first deputy head of the State Duma committee for CIS affairs, Eurasian integration and relations with compatriots Konstantin Zatulin.
“The conversation that took place between Putin and Biden is a stage, not an end result, and could not be so. It seems to me that for the United States in today's situation there is a big conflict in which the Western countries would be drawn on the side of Ukraine, it is not profitable for them in this case, they have other problems, "Zatulin said, explaining that the matter concerns relations with China. ...
The politician believes that this and other circumstances require caution from Western countries. Therefore, he noted, Biden "does not want to sacrifice his own, in some way to allow the deterioration of his position."
During the conversation, Biden stressed the special responsibility of Russia and the United States for ensuring stability in Europe and the world and said that Washington has no intentions to deploy offensive strike weapons in Ukraine. However, the American leader also noted that the United States is considering the option of introducing large-scale sanctions against Russia in the event of an escalation of the situation around Ukraine.
Putin responded by pointing out that the anti-Russian sanctions would be a serious mistake, in fact, threatening a complete rupture of Russian-American relations. He also emphasized the importance of joint work with the United States, which should result in firm legal guarantees excluding NATO's eastward advance and the deployment of threatening weapons systems in close proximity to Russian borders.
