The European Union Will Impose Sanctions against Those Responsible for Violence and Falsification in Belarus
OREANDA-NEWS. The European Union did not recognize the victory of Alexander Lukashenko in the presidential election in Belarus. The community intends to impose sanctions against those responsible for violence and election fraud.
This was stated by the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, after the summit of the heads of the EU member countries. The politician said that restrictions will be introduced soon. He did not rule out that Lukashenko could be included in the blacklist.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel claimed that the Union supports peaceful demonstrators in Belarus. She added that the presidential election cannot be considered valid. The country needs a national dialogue, the German leader said. Merkel called on the government of Lukashenko to stop the violence.
At the summit, the European leaders also decided to allocate additional 53 million euros to support the Belarusian people.
