The Conservatives Won Parliamentary Election in Great Britain
OREANDA-NEWS. The Conservative Party of Great Britain won the elections in the House of Commons with a large advantage.
According to preliminary data, the Tories received 364 out of 650 seats, while their closest rivals, the Labourists, lost almost 60 seats and will be represented by only 203 parliamentarians. Thus, the Conservatives received a majority that would allow them to pursue a policy without regard to other parties.
According to Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the United Kingdom will leave the European Union by January 31, 2020. Experts note that with such a composition, the parliament will quickly carry out all the necessary procedures, the disagreements on which had led to early elections.
“It does look as though this One Nation Conservative government has been given a powerful new mandate, to get Brexit done, unite this country and take it forward,” Johnson said. According to him, it “turned out to be an historic election that gives us now, in this new government, the chance to respect the democratic will of the British people to change this country for the better and to unleash the potential of the entire people of this country.”
The leader of the Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn, considers the results of election to be disappointing. “I will not lead Labour at next election,” the politician said, adding that for some time he will lead the party. Corbyn believes that such election results are explained by Brexit which “has so polarised and divided debate in this country” and “has overridden so much of a normal political debate.”
