Thailand Extends State of Emergency until the End of July
OREANDA-NEWS. The government of Thailand has extended the state of emergency imposed due to the coronavirus pandemic in late March, until July 31.
This was announced by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha. According to the politician, the preservation of emergency regime in the country is necessary, since it gives the government extraordinary powers to restraint the COVID-19 epidemic. “For example, government agencies can take immediate steps, including closing Thai borders, suspending business and leisure activities if a second wave occurs,” Chan-o-cha explained.
At the same time, Prime Minister noted that the state of emergency was extended for “proactive purposes.” Authorities have already weakened most of the restrictions imposed due to coronavirus spread, he added.
From July 1, Thailand will begin the next stage of easing restrictions. In particular, authorities will lift the ban on international flights. Schools will open again, and shopping centers will be able to work according to the normal schedule.
