Switzerland Will Hold Referendum to End Free Movement with EU Countries
OREANDA-NEWS. On September 27, citizens of Switzerland will vote in a referendum to maintain or suspend free movement with the countries of the European Union.
They will be asked to express their opinion on the proposal to introduce restrictions on the number of foreign workers and migrants in general. According to experts, the referendum on revising the agreement with the EU on free movement is an echo of Brexit, as a result of which the United Kingdom withdrew from the community. The EU made it clear that if Switzerland abandons free movement, it will be excluded from the European Single Market.
This referendum was initiated by the Swiss People’s Party. As its representatives noted, the level of security in the country is decreasing due to migrants. According to The Guardian, preliminary polls show that the majority of Swiss – 63 % – do not intend to vote to support the initiative.
