Senate Democratic Leader Called to Remove Trump from Power
OREANDA-NEWS. The leader of the Democratic minority in the US Senate, Chuck Schumer has called for the initiation of impeachment proceeding against President Donald Trump. In his opinion, Trump provoked his supporters to storm the Capitol on January 6. “This president must not hold office one day longer,” Schumer wrote on his Twitter page.
The Democrat offered to use the 25th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. This amendment adopted in 1967 prescribes the procedure for transferring power in the country to the vice president in the event of early termination of presidential powers. If this option fails, Schumer suggested that Congress consider impeachment of the head of state.
Members of the House of Representatives Judiciary Committee had previously proposed the same. Republicans do not support this initiative.
On January 6, Trump's supporters stormed the Capitol, seeking to revoke the official results of the presidential election. After that, the Congress approved Joe Biden’s victory. Trump said that he will ensure peaceful transfer of power on January 20, even though he does not admit his defeat.
