Russian Expert Assessed the Possibility of New Economic Sanctions against Russia
OREANDA-NEWS. The introduction of new economic sanctions against Russia by the United States and Great Britain is unlikely, according to Pavel Kanevsky, an associate professor at the Department of Political Science and Sociology of Political Processes at the Faculty of Sociology of Moscow State University, RIAC expert.
The expert noted that both the UK, the EU and the US are discussing different options for new sanctions. Kanevsky, in an interview with RIA Novosti, noted that the fact that the West is working on various options for sanctions does not mean that it will accept them.
In his opinion, we are only talking about the elaboration of various formats of sanctions, from moderate to radical. The expert explained: “I think that the sanctions against sovereign debt are a very radical scenario, which the current Biden administration, along with the EU and Britain, is unlikely to accept. This option is being discussed, but its implementation is very unlikely, because it will lead to a strong escalation and boomerang will affect the entire financial system - we must not forget that Russia's sovereign debt is tied, among other things, to foreign bonds. "
"They can discuss anything, but the likelihood of new sanctions being adopted is low, especially since the next sanctions have already been adopted," Kanevsky added.
At the same time, according to him, the already adopted Western sanctions are "more a political signal than a blow to the economy." "The sanctions of both the European Union and the United States, adopted now, are of a political nature and do not affect business," he said.
