OREANDA-NEWS. The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) announced the decision on the complaint of the Russian State Duma deputy from the Communist Party, Valery Rashkin, in the case against the Duma Speaker, Vyacheslav Volodin.

In April 2010, the court ordered Rashkin to pay Volodin 1 million roubles as a compensation for non-pecuniary damage. According to the plaintiff, “Rashkin publicly claims that in 1991 I made a coup and was guilty of crimes against the people and the Russian nation.” He called these statements defamatory.

The ECHP declared the parliamentarian’s statement at the rally in 2009 admissible.

“Deputy Valery Rashkin defeated State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin and the entire Russian judicial system in Strasbourg. The court recognized the statement as political, and therefore completely acceptable. The ECHR considered the amount of non-pecuniary damage to be inadequate,” head of the human rights group Agora, Pavel Chikov, wrote on Telegram. He clarified that the court awarded Rashkin a compensation for non-pecuniary damage of 7.8 thousand euros.
