OREANDA-NEWS. Representatives of local authorities and residents of the islands of the northern part of the Aegean Sea held a rally in the centre of Athens against the construction of migrant camps on the islands.

A few days ago, a government issued an order on requisition a number of land and real estate on five islands for the construction of closed camps for illegal migrants.

Protesters demand to cancel the order. They staged a rally near the Ministry of the Interior and marched to the building of the national Parliament. Manifestants also demand the removal of tens of thousands of migrants from the islands where the dangerous situation has developed.

The action was joined by several hundred residents of the islands of Lesvos, Samos, Chios, Kos and Leros. Due to the demonstration, traffic in the center of Athens was blocked.
