OREANDA-NEWS. Russian President Vladimir Putin doubted the need to establish the country’s status of nuclear weapon status in the Constitution.

The politician declared this at a meeting with a working group on the preparation of amendments to the Basic Law. The initiative was proposed by a member of this group, writer Zakhar Prilepin.

“As for nuclear status, I don’t know whether this should be noted in the Constitution. After all, the question is not that we are a nuclear power today, but that we should be one step ahead on all the latest weapons systems,” Putin said. He added that it touches upon not only nuclear weapons, but also arms based on new physical principles. According to the head of state, someday nuclear weapons may cease to be most effective or even become meaningless, because new technologies will appear.

It is known that in total the working group on the preparation of amendments to the Constitution has collected more than 500 proposals.
