OREANDA-NEWS. Turkey has opposed the principles of the functioning of the North Atlantic Alliance, undermining its unity. This was claimed by United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. The diplomat recalled Ankara’s provocative actions in the Eastern Mediterranean, Libya, Syria and the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh.

Commenting on relations between Greece and Turkey, the head of American diplomacy noted that the de-escalation mechanism, which does not work due to the fault of Ankara, should be restarted. Relations between the two countries have worsened against the backdrop of research carried out by a Turkish ship in one of the regions of the Eastern Mediterranean. Greece considers this region its exclusive economic zone.

Turkey has repeatedly called on Greece to resolve the territorial dispute at the negotiating table to avoid possible bloodshed, and warned European states against interfering. However, the countries have not been able to agree on the negotiations. Both Greece and Turkey are NATO members. The gas-rich field is located on the shelf of Greece and Cyprus.
