Polish Prime Minister Proposed to Hold an Extraordinary EU Summit on Belarus
OREANDA-NEWS. Prime Minister of Poland, Mateusz Morawiecki, has launched an initiative to hold an emergency summit of the European Union, dedicated to the situation in Belarus after the presidential election in the country.
The statement was released on August 10 on the official website of the Polish government. “Poland is responsible for its closest neighbours. Therefore, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, in a letter to the head of the European Council Charles Michel and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, called for an extraordinary EU summit in connection with the events in Belarus,” the message says.
The letter notes that after the presidential election, the Belarusian authorities used force against their citizens demanding changes in the country. “We must together support the Belarusians in their striving for freedom. So, the initiative of the head of the Polish government to persuade the European Council to this issue was launched,” the statement explains.
