Polexit: Poland is Сlose to Leaving the European Union
OREANDA-NEWS Poland is close to leaving the European Union (Polexit) because of the conflict with Brussels. This opinion was expressed by the President of the European Council, Polish politician Donald Tusk, quoted by the British newspaper Express.
There is a "very serious threat" that Polexit could happen "accidentally," he said.
In his opinion, the leader of the ruling party of Poland Jaroslaw Kaczynski is teetering on the brink and can provoke the country's exit from the EU by a simple mistake.
"I fear that Europe's desire to keep Poland at all costs may be less than in the case of the UK. So the situation, in my opinion, is very, very serious," Tusk concluded.
The question of possible withdrawal from the EU is regularly discussed in Poland on the background of the reforms, which were criticized by European institutions, refusal of admission of migrants and a critical attitude to the head of the European Council Donald Tusk, who earlier held the post of Prime Minister of the country and is the co-founder of the now largest opposition party, "Civic platform".
Thus, the decision of the ruling Polish party "Law and justice" to modernize the judicial system caused particular dissatisfaction of the European Commission. The EC believes that the adopted laws violate the rule of law and give political power control over the judiciary. In September, the European Union filed a lawsuit in the European court against Poland because of the reform of the judicial system in the country. According to it, judges of the Polish Supreme court will retire not in 70, but in 65 years.
At the end of last year, the EC launched a procedure that could lead to the deprivation of Warsaw's right to vote in the Council of the European Union. In August, the EC gave the Polish authorities a month to bring the judicial reform in line with EU requirements.
