New President of Lithuania Told How He Sees Relations with Russia

OREANDA-NEWS. Relations between Vilnius and Moscow are unlikely to change, otherwise it will be a betrayal of the Ukrainian partners, said the newly elected President of the country Gitanas Nauseda. His words are quoted by the Lithuanian media. At the same time, the head of state noted the importance of improving the dialogue with Minsk. In his opinion, Lithuania and Belarus should become good neighbors who are “not afraid to criticize”.
Before the second round of elections, Nauseda spoke out against "harsh rhetoric" in relations with Russia and stated the need for a "pragmatic approach" in the dialogue with Moscow. He added that Lithuania cannot "close all windows with a neighbor in diplomatic, cultural and economic relations."
On Monday, the Lithuanian CEC announced the victory of Nausede in the second round of the presidential election. He fought for this post as an independent member. According to the new head of state, the main task will be to create conditions for the well-being of Lithuanians. Nauseda promised to make the first official visit to Poland.
In accordance with the Constitution of Lithuania, the president is the head of state. He is elected by citizens of the Republic of Lithuania for a term of five years on the basis of universal, equal and direct suffrage, by secret ballot. The same person can be elected president of Lithuania no more than two times in a row.
The election of the president is appointed by the parliament (Sejm). Regular presidential elections are held on the last Sunday two months before the expiration of the term of office of the current president. The elected president takes up his duties the next day after the expiration of the term of office of the current president and after taking the oath.
