OREANDA-NEWS. On February 24, Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad resigned. This was reported in a statement by the administration of the head of government. “The corresponding petition was sent to the Supreme Ruler (King) of Malaysia,” the message says. Other details have not yet been disclosed.
Shortly before this, the Malaysian United Indigenous Party, led by Mahathir, withdrew from the ruling coalition Alliance of Hope. This political structure was created in 2017 and brought together four opposition parties. At the same time, an agreement was reached that, if it wins the parliamentary elections in May of 2018, Mahathir would become Prime Minister for two years, and then he should transfer the post to Anwar Ibrahim, the leader of the People’s Justice Party which is the largest in this bloc.
