Lukashenko's Idea of a Humanitarian Corridor for Migrants was Called Unacceptable in Germany
OREANDA-NEWS. The proposal of the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko to open a humanitarian corridor to Germany for two thousand migrants from the Belarusian-Polish border is unacceptable. This was stated by the official representative of the Cabinet of Ministers of Germany Steffen Seibert. His words are quoted by Russian media RIA Novosti.
«The idea that a humanitarian corridor to Germany can open for 2 thousand migrants... this is an unacceptable decision for Germany or the EU», he said.
The German cabinet also refused to comment on the talks between the Belarusian leader and Acting Chancellor Angela Merkel. They explained that they could not provide any additional details of the dialogue due to confidentiality.
Merkel and Lukashenko discussed the situation with migrants at the Belarusian-Polish border on November 18. Lukashenko proposed to create a corridor for refugees staying in a border camp. Merkel refused to accept migrants. She explained that the problem is a pan-European one, and Germany cannot solve it alone. However, they came to a «definite understanding» regarding further actions. In particular, it was agreed that officials from Belarus and the EU will be identified who will deal with the resolution of the migration crisis.
The situation with migrants on the border of Belarus and the EU countries escalated on November 8. Then several thousand refugees from the Middle East came to the border with Poland. Separate groups of migrants began to storm checkpoints, but these attempts were stopped by Polish security forces.
