Lukashenko Allowed Holding Early Presidential Election in Belarus
OREANDA-NEWS. President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko said that he is inclined to hold early election of head of state, but it is too early to talk about the timing.
The politician claimed this during an interview with Russian media which was broadcast by RT channel. “If we change the Constitution, then we should resolve the presidential elections in the Constitution. But separately – and I am inclined to this – we may hold early presidential election,” Lukashenko said. The Belarusian leader added that he does not rule out this, but currently he is not ready to talk about specific dates. “If the presidential elections are held ahead of schedule, then they should probably take place earlier than the parliamentary. Nevertheless, the parliament should be preserved before a new president appears,” Lukashenko explained.
The Belarusian President announced large-scale changes to the country’s Constitution that would redistribute the powers of the authorities back in June, before the election. Lukashenko stated that this will initiate changes that will take place “in a civilized manner” and “without breaking the social order.”
In mid-August, Lukashenko said that he would not announce new election under pressure, because this could lead to the death of the state and the nation.
