London Can Send Hundreds of Soldiers to the Baltic States and Poland
OREANDA-NEWS Due to the presence of Russian troops near the border with Ukraine, the UK government is considering sending hundreds of additional troops to the Baltic States and Poland. On Friday, January 21, The Times newspaper writes about this, relying on the information of an informed interlocutor in the British Ministry of Defense and explaining that this step is aimed at deterring Russia.
Currently, 830 British troops are stationed in Estonia and another 140 in Poland as part of the NATO mission. If NATO allies in Eastern Europe face an increase in the presence of Russian troops on their border, additional units can be deployed there promptly, the publication quotes the source as saying.
According to the newspapper, about 100 British soldiers are currently in Ukraine on a training mission. About 30 more were recently sent to teach Ukrainian soldiers how to use anti-tank missiles that London sent to Kiev.
Meanwhile, British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss warned Russian President Vladimir Putin against making a «huge strategic mistake». «The Kremlin has not learned the lessons of history. The invasion will only drag into a terrible swamp and lead to a loss of lives comparable to the one we saw in the Soviet-Afghan war and in the conflict in Chechnya», she said during a visit to Sydney, Australia.
