OREANDA-NEWS. The National Council for Electronic Media (NEPLP) of Latvia has suspended for a year the retransmission of the Russian TV channel «Russia-RTR» broadcasting for an international audience. The head of the media regulator, Ivars Abolins, announced the decision on Twitter.

According to him, Latvia has protected, protects and will continue to protect it's information space. Abolins noticed, that NEPLP in the morning decided to ban the retransmission of «Russia-RTR» on the Latvian territory for a year from February 15.

Claims to the Russian TV channel from NEPLP appeared in July 2020. The regulator saw a violation of the Latvian law on mass media in one of the issues of the program «60 Minutes», dedicated to the discussion of the situation in Ukraine. According to NEPLP, the program has excited the hatred.

Earlier it was reported, that the Latvian authorities will introduce fines for watching Russian TV channels. Up to this point, sanctions could be applied for broadcasting prohibited content for commercial purposes, and with the adoption of the amendments, a ban on the use of such video material also for personal purposes is introduced. It is assumed, that the amendments to the law will restrict the access of viewers to unlicensed viewing of Russian TV channels in the republic.
