Japan Advocates Maintaining Current Structure of G7
OREANDA-NEWS. Tokyo considers it extremely important to maintain the current structure of the Group of Seven (G7). This was stated by Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary, Yoshihide Suga, commenting on the intention of US President Donald Trump to invite the leaders of Russia, India, Australia and South Korea to the G7 summit.
“It is up to the USA, as the organizer of this meeting, to agree on the final form of its holding. But we consider it extremely important to maintain the current structure of the Group of Seven,” Suga said. The Japanese politician refused to comment on the message that Tokyo brought to the USA its disagreement with the invitation to the summit of South Korean President Moon Jae-in, saying that Seoul’s policy regarding North Korea and China does not correspond to the general course of the G7. “I would like to refrain from commenting on current diplomatic exchanges,” Suga explained.
At the end of May, Trump decided to invite representatives of Russia, India, Australia and South Korea to the G7 summit. In August of 2019, American leader advocated the return of Russia to G8. In early December 2019, US congressmen voted against ‘s participation in the G7 summits. However, the Foreign Ministry of Russia announced disappearance of Moscow’s desire to join the international association.
