In Washington, Protest Actions Escalated into Riots
OREANDA-NEWS. NBC News reports that protests in the US capital city Washington erupted into riots when police ousted demonstrators, who tried to pull down the statue of the seventh president of the United States, Andrew Jackson, from Lafayette Square.
Manifestants knocked down a temporary fence around the monument, some of them climbed on it to tie a rope. The crowd shouted: “Hey, Hey, Ho, Ho, Andrew Jackson’s got to go!”
The clashes began when the police tried to form a barrier around the statue. As a result, law enforcement officers used teargas.
Earlier, four policemen were injured while trying to remove tents from Lafayette Square, which blocked H Street. Protesters threw various things at them. Several protesters were detained.
A wave of protests and riots swept through American cities after the death of Afro-American George Floyd arrested by the police of Minneapolis.
