In Montenegro, Believers Protest against the Law on Religion
OREANDA-NEWS. Numerous Montenegrin believers and priests took part in a protest march to the parliament building in the center of Podgorica during a discussion of the controversial religion law, but were stopped by police. Policemen blocked the way for priests opposing the law. The action is peaceful, believers near the cordons started a public prayer.
Montenegro Prime Minister, Dusko Markovic, and opposition parliamentarians called on the police not to use force against civilians.
The initiator of the bill is the ruling Democratic Party of Socialists.
The Serbian Orthodox Church fears that after the adoption of the law, the seizure of Serbian church property and its transfer to the Montenegrin “autocephalous” church unrecognized in the Orthodox community will begin.
Protesters call for signing an agreement with the Serbian Orthodox Church, renouncing the seizure of its property and returning or compensating for the property seized earlier.
