In Minsk, Thousands of Students Supported Protest Action
OREANDA-NEWS. Correspondent of the newspaper Izvestia reported that the number of students gathered for the solidarity march in Minsk increased to about 10 thousand.
Students from several colleges and universities in the Belarusian capital began a solidarity march on the morning of September 1. Initially, 150 students gathered at the main entrance of the Belarusian National Technical University. They indicated their demands: the recognition of the presidential elections held on August 9 as invalid, the end of the political persecution of citizens, and the release of all political prisoners.
Later, the militia tried to stop the march and began to detain the participants of the action. Despite this, the students continued to move towards the Independence Square where the Supreme Soviet of Belarus and the Minsk City Hall are located.
As reported by the portal Onliner, calls for Belarusian students to take to the streets in demonstrations on September 1 were circulated on social networks the day before. Activists suggested signing a student petition demanding fair elections and handing it over to the Minister of Education of Belarus.
