Germany Deports Twice as many Migrants in 2020
OREANDA-NEWS. Germany sent 10,800 migrants out of the country in 2020 — twice as many as a year earlier. In 2019, 22,097 people were expelled from Germany, the «dpa» news agency reported on Wednesday, March 3, citing a copy of the response of the German Interior Ministry to the request of the Left Party faction in the Bundestag.
According to the document, most of the migrants were sent from Germany to Georgia and Albania, and the first case of deportation to France was recorded. Almost 9 thousand people were expelled from Germany by air, 1780 — by sea and about 50 — by land. Almost 23% of all those expelled were women, and 18% were minors. The federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia has deported the largest number of migrants.
The Interior Ministry declined to specify which airlines are used to expel migrants, citing the fact, that such publicity could provoke a barrage of criticism against these airlines, and as a result, they will refuse to cooperate.
Ulla Jelpke, an expert on domestic politics at the «Left Party», noted that there are increasing reports of the use of harsh methods in the expulsion of migrants. «The elderly, the sick, those in need of treatment, and even those who were born in Germany and do not speak the language of their intended country of origin are being expelled from the country», she said.
