OREANDA-NEWS. Ex-president of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Pervez Musharraf, was sentenced to death for high treason. This was reported on December 17 by Samaa TV channel.

For the first time in the country’s history, a panel of a special court of three judges sentenced the former head of state to death under article 6 of the Constitution of Pakistan, according to which anyone violating the state’s main law “using force or demonstrating force” is guilty of treason. Two out of three judges voted for the death penalty.

According to investigators, Musharraf, being the head of Pakistan, committed treason in November 2007. He introduced a state of emergency in the country and ordered to arrest the members of the Supreme Court.

Pervez Musharraf, the former chief of staff of the Ground Forces, became president in 2001, still remaining army general. The politician has survived three assassination attempts. To ensure his re-election for a second term, he introduced a martial law. The Supreme Court was opposed to his re-election, as Musharraf remained a general, although only a civilian could be the head of Pakistan.

As a result, he had to leave the post of chief of the Ground Forces. In August 2008, he resigned under the threat of impeachment. Musharraf lived in Great Britain, but in March 2013 he returned to his homeland to participate in the parliamentary elections under the guarantee that he would not be arrested. In October 2013, he was taken into custody on charges of killing more than 100 people during the riots in 2007, but was released on bail in less than a month.
