Ex-President of Kyrgyzstan Is Sentenced to 11 Years in Prison
OREANDA-NEWS. The Pervomaisky District Court of Bishkek sentenced former President of Kyrgyzstan, Almazbek Atambayev, to 11 years and 2 months in prison for corruption while releasing underworld leader Aziz Batukayev and other crimes.
Judge Emilbek Kaipov announced the verdict: “The court found Atambayev guilty and decided to sentence him to 11 years and 2 months in prison with confiscation of state awards and property.”
Atambayev was holding the post of the head of state from 2011 to 2017. He was detained on August 8, 2019 after a two-day assault on his residence, which was accompanied by riots with supporters of the ex-president. As a result of the special operation, one person was killed, 85 people were injured. In addition to corruption, Atambayev was charged with the murder of an officer of the special unit of the State Committee for National Security. He is also accused of armed resistance to the authorities and is suspected of involvement in two illegal land transactions.
