OREANDA-NEWS. The poisoning of Russian opposition leader Aleksey Navalny is a typical manifestation of Russia’s behaviour on the world stage, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said.

“To those that advocate closer ties with Russia, I say that the poisoning of Aleksey Navalny with an advanced chemical agent is not a one off,” the politician said, speaking at the European Parliament. The head of the European Commission recalled Russia’s behaviour in situations with Georgia, Ukraine, and the poisoning of Sergey Skripal in Salisbury. “This pattern is not changing – and no pipeline will change that,” she resumed, meaning the situation with the construction of the gas pipeline Nord Stream 2.

Von der Leyen also said that the European Commission will propose a sanction regime against the Russian Federation similar to the Magnitsky Act adopted previously in the United States.
