EU Council Approved Sanctions Regime for Human Rights Violations
OREANDA-NEWS. The EU Council at the level of foreign ministers has approved a global sanctions regime for violations of human rights, which does not copy American Magnitsky Act. It is expected to take effect from December 10, a European diplomatic source told TASS on December 7.
The regime provides for the creation of a global blacklist including persons who are prohibited from entering the European Union and access to the EU financial system. All their assets in European banks are subject to freezing. EU residents are not allowed to provide these individuals with any financial services.
The sanctions regime was approved by the ministers without discussion, since it was already agreed on December 2 at the level of ambassadors of all 27 states of the EU.
Anyone who falls under the sanctions can try to challenge their inclusion in the blacklist in the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg.
