Erdogan Rejected the Appeal of Turkish Opposition for Holding Talks with al-Assad
OREANDA-NEWS. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan commented on the appeal of the head of the main opposition movement in the country, People’s Republican Party, Kemal Kılıcdaroglu, for starting negotiations with Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad.
“The head of our opposition suggests that I meet with al-Assad. I spoke with al-Assad before, but I saw that he has no conscience. I asked why he did not issue passports to the Kurds. And now he attacks our soldiers,” Erdogan said, speaking to deputies from the ruling Justice and Development Party.
Last week, Turkish leader said that Ankara is not satisfied with the results of the talks with Moscow on the Syrian governorate of Idlib and is ready to start a military operation in the region. Russian President’s Spokesman Dmitry Peskov considers this to be the worst scenario. Erdogan also stated that he had called on Russian leader Vladimir Putin to put pressure on al-Assad so that the Syrian army would stop the offensive in Idlib and move away from Turkish observation posts.
