OREANDA-NEWS. Russian opposition politician Aleksey Navalny won 8,500 euros in compensation in the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in the case of his detention in Moscow on May 6, 2012. The decision on the lawsuit Navalny and Gunko versus Russia was published on the website of the ECHR.

Aleksey Navalny and Vadim Gunko were detained at a rally on Bolotnaya Square in the Russian capital before the inauguration of President Vladimir Putin. Oppositionists spent the night at the police stattion, and then were brought to administrative responsibility. Navalny also complained that police officer used force against him during arrest.

The ECHR found that in Russia the rights of both plaintiffs to liberty and security (Article 5 of the European Convention on Human Rights), the right to freedom of assembly (Article 11), and the right to an independent trial (Article 6) were violated. According to judges, Navalny’s rights were also violated under Article 3, which prohibits torture or degrading treatment or punishment.

Gunko was awarded 7,500 euros in compensation.
