Bulgaria Accused Two Russian Diplomats of Espionage
OREANDA-NEWS. The Office of the Chief Public Prosecutor of Bulgaria has collected evidence of intelligence activities by two Russian diplomats in favour of Moscow. This is said in the statement of the agency.
It is noted that two Russian citizens with diplomatic status have been collecting classified information about plans to modernize the Bulgarian army and military equipment since 2016. To do this, they came into contact with the citizens of Bulgaria, who have access to information about the military industry of the country, promised and transferred rewards to them, the Prosecutor’s Office added. The criminal proceedings against the diplomats were suspended due to their immunity.
Chief Public Prosecutor, Ivan Geshev, officially notified Foreign Minister of Bulgaria, Ekaterina Zakharieva, about the results of the investigation and the actions of the Office.
This is the second such case in 2020. In January, Bulgaria accused two Russian diplomats of spying. According to investigators, they collected intelligence information about the elections in Bulgaria and the country’s energy sector.
