OREANDA-NEWS. The British Labour Party intends to introduce a four-day work week within 10 years if it wins the next parliamentary election.

It was announced by the shadow chancellor John McDonnell, who told Labour’s conference in Brighton: “We should work to live, not live to work.” He promised that the government would introduce a short working week without a reduction in wages. "The next Labour government will put in place the changes needed to reduce average full-time hours to 32 a week within the next decade,” McDonnell said.

According to the politician, this measure can be implemented by the rejecting the European Union’s directive on working hours, according to which company employees should work on average no more than 48 hours a week.

In September 2018, Frances O’Grady, the General Secretary of the British Trades Union Congress, had already proposed reducing the working week to 4 days. As The Independent newspaper reported, nowadays many companies (for example, Amazon) distribute profits incorrectly, for they should be used to reduce labour time.

In late July, the new Prime Minister of Great Britain Boris Johnson confirmed his promise to withdraw the country from the European Union by October 31. He also hopes that London will succeed in getting an acceptable Brexit agreement with Brussels authorities. Opponents of Brexit in the Parliament insist on Johnson’s dismissal. McDonnell said that if a vote of no confidence is announced to the Prime Minister, the opposition will offer that Labour Party’s leader Jeremy Corbyn would take this office.
