OREANDA-NEWS. The UK government has spent on preparing Britain’s exit from the EU (Brexit) £ 4.4 billion (more than $ 5.6 billion) of the £ 6.3 billion allocated by the Treasury. This was reported on Friday by the BBC Broadcasting Corporation, citing the British National Statistics Office.
According to him, we are talking primarily about staff costs - £ 1.9 billion ($ 2.45 billion). The number of employees working on Brexit planning reached its maximum in October 2019, when the number of people involved in solving this problem reached 22 thousand people. Another major expense item included advertising, the involvement of experts and consultants, the creation of new structures, and the government-sponsored Get Ready for Brexi campaign, which cost London £ 46 million ($ 59.3 million).
There were some obvious financial losses, which, according to the government, amounted to £ 92 million ($ 118.7 million). These funds include, inter alia, the payment by London of £ 33 million ($ 42.6 million) to Eurotunnel as part of a litigation agreement regarding the provision of additional ferry services in the event of the Brexit scenario being implemented without a deal.
The UK left the EU on February 1, 2020 after three years of negotiating exit conditions. Brussels and London agreed on a transition period until the end of 2020, during which all European standards apply to the United Kingdom.
