Borrell Announced His Readiness to Go to Minsk to Resolve the Crisis in Belarus
OREANDA-NEWS. Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union, stated that he is ready to go to Minsk to help resolve the crisis in Belarus. However, President of the republic, Alexander Lukashenko, refuses to interact with the EU. “I am ready to go to Minsk if this could contribute to progress. Until now, Lukashenko has refused to engage with the European Union at any level,” Borrell wrote in his blog on September 22.
A day earlier, the politician said that he would do everything in his power to get the approval of sanctions against Belarus.
On September 21, it was reported that the foreign ministers of the EU countries could not agree on the list of Belarusian officials against whom the Union plans to impose sanctions for falsifying election and violating human rights.
On September 17, the European Parliament adopted a resolution calling for a freeze of any transfers of funds to Minsk and a stoppage of lending by the European Investment Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
