Biden is Considering the Possibility of Transferring Troops to Eastern Europe
OREANDA-NEWS Amid growing concerns about Russia's invasion of Ukraine, US President Joe Biden is considering sending several thousand American troops, as well as military aircraft and ships to NATO countries located in Eastern Europe. This was reported on Monday, January 24, by the American newspaper The New York Times, citing sources in the US administration.
According to the media, at a meeting at the presidential residence in Camp David on January 22, senior officials of the US Department of Defense offered Biden several scenarios. One of them involves sending up to 5,000 military personnel, and in case of deterioration of the situation, their number can be increased tenfold.
The head of the White House is expected to make a decision this week. The deployment of American troops in Ukraine itself is not on the agenda in Washington yet. The US Department of Defense declined to comment on The New York Times report.
On the night of January 24, it became known that the US State Department ordered the families of Americans working at the American embassy in Kiev to leave Ukraine. The reason for their departure is «the continuing threat of military actions by Russia».
In the list of official travel recommendations on the website of the US State Department, Ukraine has been transferred to the strictest 4th red level — US citizens are strongly advised to refuse to travel to Ukraine «due to the increased threat of Russian military actions and COVID-19».
